The JJ Electonic 5581 beam power tetrode tube is a high quality option for guitar and home audio tube amplifiers. It is a great substitute for the 6L6 tube, but with slightly less power having a plate dissipation of 23W. This tube is versatile balanced offering, it is warm and tight with great top end chime. It is known to be a very reliable tube due to its robust construction, and can easily withstand the higher plate voltages found in many modern guitar amps. An ideal choice if you find your 6L6 amp too bright.
Important - whilst very tolerant with regards to biasing, it is essential to rebias any tube amp fitted with 5881 tubes, targetting 50% - 70% of the rated maximum 23W rating in order to ensure optimal tube life. This will also provide vintage tone with slightly less clean headroom.
